Humble Pie

Last night I went to the store. I was in a hurry because I needed to get to bed. I wake up before the sun now (weird, I know).  I was only buying two things. Barely two dollars worth of merchandise.  I am unfortunately condemned to shop at Walmart because I'm poor...sigh... anyway...  At that time of night, they only have three check out lines open and none of them are express. I got behind two guys who were doing their year's worth of shopping.

I sat there and pouted thinking, "If I was in line and had a lot of stuff, and the person behind me only had a few things, I would let them go first. I'm the only considerate person left in the world. The rest of humanity is selfish and thoughtless."  My little dark cloud was gathering, and lightening was starting to flash as the guys started loading up the conveyor belt. Then, just as the cashier was to start checking his items, he said, "No, stop." He turned to me, "You can go first."

I felt bad for thinking so little of the world. It's nice to have surprises every once in a while to remind you the human race isn't as bad as I let myself believe.

False Alarm

So, the way we talked about it the night we negotiated my return to the working world, it sounded somewhat trial-ish, but leaning toward permanent. Not so much.  My friend posted the job on Craigslist and interviewed three people for it today, and who knows if any more tomorrow.  I was told I'm only helping out till he can find someone with experience.

I totally don't blame him. He's got a business to run and it can't run on charity.  The truth is, no matter how quickly I am able to pick things up, it's a job full of confusing insurance crap and a lot of things to remember.  Those things take time, and his business can't afford to slow down and wait for me to play catch up. So I'm not mad at him- just a little bummed that sometime within a week- or less- I'll be back slumming it looking for a job.

Working Girl

When I got up this morning, I thought, "Huh, I think I'll go do free stuff with friends today. You know, stuff like visit the Coors Brewery (gross, by the way) and the Celestial Seasoning Tea factory (awesome!)"  Never in my wildest dreams did the thought, "You know, I think I'll have a job by the end of the day in a field I never even considered."

I have a friend who opened his own dental practice about a year ago.  We had talked about my working there before, but it didn't seem like my thing- well, now we've both reached desperation. I really need a job- and he really needs an office manager.  So starting Monday (THIS Monday, as in 30 hours from this post) I am working in a dental office. It's a lot to learn- and fast with no one to really teach me how except the people who don't have time to teach me.  I already have a migraine- but I'm excited for a new challenge and to learn something new. But I'm scared to death...

Heaven Help Me (actually, praying about this stuff is what got me into trouble in the first place. Be careful what you pray for, you just might get it).

Everybody's Irish on St. Patrick's Day!

But I actually AM!

These are a few of the places my family is from:
  • Lisburn
  • Malone
  • Carrickfergus
  • Belfast
  • Bellowskae
  • Carrowne Croagh
  • Shanes
  • Kildonan
I just mapquested them all and they're all Northern Ireland.  Sigh... I love having green in my blood.  And I've been told several times that I'm full of Blarney (in the US we pronounce it differntly, but it's essentially the same).

For a fun St. Patty's treat, go here and enjoy.  I have funny friends.

For a beautiful Irish Blessing, go here.  Me Mum sent it to me.

For reference to a real life Irish St Patty's Celebration, go here. I'm lucky enough to have good friends serving there.

Libraries. What do you think of when you think of that word?

  • Quiet
  • Books
  • Quiet
  • Studying
  • Quiet
  • Reading
  • Quiet
  • Snippy Ladies telling you, "Shhhhh...."
The weather has blessed me enough today to sit in my happy place.  I'm in my little alcove outside the library enjoying the overcast yet warm-ish day.  And blaring from *inside* the library, is a blasted Karaoke party. What the heck?  I've already heard pathetic versions of YMCA, Eye of the Tiger, I Will Survive, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and several other off key and wholly irritating attempts at singing.

When did the library become this kind of place? Aren't there school gyms and community centers for this kind of activity?  Why do they need to desecrate the quiet sanctuary that is "Library?"

Over It

Today I reach a milestone.  It's been 6 months since I last saw "Willoughby." (remember him?)

It was really funny.  Last week I was standing in my kitchen and thinking, "Wow, I'm actually over him. Go me!"  I've been dealing with feelings for him for two years and I was relieved to be able to say I am officially over him.  I mean, I still think of him a lot- but I have no desire to be near him. I don't plot ways to accidentally run into him.  I deleted him and any family members from my phone a long time ago to remove any temptation I might have to call and... you know just check on his daughter and see how she's doing with her illness...

Anyway, less than 24 hours after having this conversation with myself, he called.  What The Heck!? He hasn't contacted me in (three days shy of) six months.  I was at a movie when he called (Alice in Wonderland, totally awesome movie. I highly recommend it, but then, I adore Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter).

He left a message. I deleted it- and the number from the call history.  I wanted to throw up when I heard his voice. I got mad, cried, then laughed about it.  I know exactly why he called. He wants hookups with my Circus Monkey.  Last time he went on a trip I was practically his travel agent and found all kinds of things for him to do.  I'm sure that's what he wants again. Sorry pal, you blew it.

There is so much more to this story- but I'm quite content to not go into all the gory details.

I was a little annoyed at God's sense of humor- but I figure if this was some kind of test, I hope I passed.  Cuz still, I have no desire to talk to him.  I don't care how attracted I am to him- I am mean enough to myself to spend time with people who make me feel even worse about myself.  He's an idiot (Willoughby, not God).

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Monday. Bleh.

I tossed and turned all night, and when I finally drifted off to sleep, I woke up crying after having had a nightmare that my best friend had died. I was inconsolable, her husband was in shock, and her two year old had no idea what was going on.  She had written love letters to them just days before, thinking it would be cute for them the get notes in the mail.  Little did she know they would be a voice from the dust.  It was a horrible dream. That's how my day started.

I walked into the bathroom and looked in the mirror.  Do you know what a night of tossing, turning and nightmares does to the looks of a person. It wasn't pretty.  But after a shower and some serious makeup- I don't look *as* bad. Plus I'm wearing my favorite outfit that I can't help but feel cute in.

I got a callback from a job I'd applied for. They were interested in me and wanted to set up an interview- but the job is in Boise and when I told them I would have to relocate, I was told I was out of the running. He wanted to fill it immediately and not wait for someone to move. Sigh...

A few months ago my computer started doing things.  When I plugged in the cord, there was no power getting to it.  Sometimes if I jiggled and cord it would eventually catch and start working.  When I had the computer on my lap I had to be careful every time I moved or it would stop the power flow.  Finally last week it stopped working altogether.  I took it to the computer hospital today, afraid (with my luck) that it was not the cord, but something inside the actual computer.

I walked into the nerds paradise.  I thought stereotypes only existed on film.  But every person who worked there fit the nerd stereotype, I'm talking thick glasses, and high nasaly voices.  I laughed from sheer delight. Luckily, I think nerds are kind of cute, so I found an attractive one and got some help.

A small fortune later, I left with a new cord and went home to try it out.  *sigh of relief*  That was the problem.  I have found that when it comes to machines or flesh, if they have to open it to fix the problem, it's way more spendy.  I got off lucky this time.  I just need to take better care of my Scooter (yes, Scooter the computer).

The one really ugly thing I have to deal with today (since I feel a *little* cuter) is this:

This has got to be the most hideous assemblage of prints ever.  And someone got paid to design this library. The library itself is quite nice, but whoever picked out this carpet- and chairs, should be shot.
